CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® Summary

If you’re someone who enjoys traveling then the AAdvantage Platinum Select card is a good option. While it makes the lives of frequent American Airlines flyers easier, the card also allows non-AA flyers an opportunity to diversify their travel rewards portfolio by earning miles with a major airline. With a generous bonus program, reduced mileage awards, and no foreign transaction fees, this card should be considered for any traveler who enjoys the opportunity to fly when they can.

PROS:
  • Earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles when you spend at least $2,500 in the first three months
  • Double miles awarded at restaurants and gas stations
  • Free checked bag for you and four companions on your reservation
  • No foreign transaction fees

CONS:
  • Annual fee of $99
  • No Admirals Club Lounge access

Best Features

Right now the credit card offers 50,000 bonus miles when you spend at least $2,500 in the first three months. That’s enough for a one-way ticket to Europe, or even a business class one-way ticket to certain regions in South America. New features, such as earning double miles for every $1 spent at restaurants and gas stations, makes it easier for cardholders to redeem reward miles at levels that can be used for free flights.

Additional features, such as priority boarding and free checked bags, offer travelers the perks that can make flying stress-free. Cardmembers can also enjoy a redemption bonus with the AAdvantage Platinum Select card. When travelers redeem reward miles, they will earn 10% of the miles back (up to a limit of 10,000 per year).

Drawbacks

Nowadays, many credit cards offer $0 yearly fees, but the Platinum Select card does not follow this trend. Although the first year is free, the rate jumps up to $99 annually after that.

Redeeming miles is restrictive with the Platinum Select card. With most general travel cards they allow cardmembers to apply the rewards they have earned on several types of travel features (car, hotel, flight, etc.). With the AAdvantage Platinum Select credit card, users are only able to redeem the miles on award flights and seat upgrades through American Airlines, or it’s OneWorld Partners. If you’re a traveler who likes to have options when it comes to spending reward miles, then the Platinum Select card may not be the best fit for you.

The AAdvantage Platinum Select does not offer membership passes to the Admirals Club lounge, while other similarly-tiered cards do. The United Explorer Card, which provides the cardmember two club passes each year to their respected airport lounge.

Overall Summary

Like most other airline credit cards the AAdvantage Platinum Select card makes it simple for holders to earn miles. Double reward miles are earned for every one dollar spent on American Airlines purchases (tickets and in-flight services), restaurants and gas stations. If you spend $20,000 or more in purchases during your card membership year, then you earn a discount of $100 towards any American Airlines flight purchases.

The Platinum Select card also offers cardmembers lost/delayed baggage protection, travel accident insurance, trip cancellation/interruption protection and rental car protection. The lost/delayed baggage protection and rental car protection only applies if the ticket and rental car were purchased using your AAdvantage Platinum Select card.

Who this card is best for

It might go without saying that this card is ideal if you are a frequent user of American Airlines. The preferred boarding, checked bags policy, and double-miles opportunities certainly make this an attractive card for that frequent flyer. However, even if you’re not an American Airlines loyalist, this credit card is worth taking a look for the simple reason of expanding your reward miles portfolio for when you do want to travel.

If you are looking for a credit card that offers lounge passes, then it might be a better fit to go with another airline or travel credit card that has those. If you don’t want to feel restricted in how to use your reward miles, a general travel card might be a better option.
