Best Features

The best features of this credit card are as you might imagine, related to travel and flying. The 60,000 introductory bonus mile offer, after you have spent $3,000 in the first four months of card ownership, make this offer one of the more generous airline and travel offers out there. On average a one-way domestic ticket with Delta will cost a traveler about 10,000 miles so it is possible to earn up to three free roundtrip tickets with this offer alone. Comparatively, some airline cards that will only offer up to 50,000 bonus miles after you have spent at least $3,000 in the first three months. With the extra month to hit the $3,000 spending mark and the extra 10,000 miles, this is a very attractive offer.

As a cardholder your SkyMiles will never expire. In fact, Delta is the only major U.S. airline with a miles program that never expires. Additional perks with the credit card include no blackout dates on any Delta flights and priority boarding. Having the ability to choose any date you want to fly and knowing you will be one of the first people to board the plane can be big stress relievers for many flyers. Cardholders can also take comfort in knowing that they will earn at least one bonus mile for every dollar spent using the credit card. That offer jumps up to two bonus miles for every dollar spent when you use your card on any Delta Airlines related purchase.

Drawbacks

Even though in the first 12 months cardholders have a $0 annual fee, that rate jumps to $95 annually thereafter. For some members, this might be considered a hefty annual fee to pay for, especially if you are not considered to be a frequent flyer of Delta. In fact, the cardholder would have to spend about $700 a year on Delta flights in order to make it feel like the annual fee is worth the price.

A common misconception might be that just because the Gold Delta SkyMiles card has the word “Gold” in its title, then cardholders think they have automatic membership into the SkyMiles gold status. Unfortunately, this credit card only gets you membership into their baseline, general membership level. You would still have to earn your way up from general by spending at least $3,000 on Delta flights, which is the same rate as any other flyer.

Overall Summary

The Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express may have similar perks that other airline credit cards have, but it’s important to note that others, such as the intro bonus mile offer and no blackout dates, are facets that others do not offer with their credit cards. This is a credit card that will help you expand your airline portfolio and earn rewards flights with Delta and it’s other international SkyTeam partnership airlines.

Who this card is best for

Perhaps this credit is best for someone who is a regular flyer of Delta Airlines or prefers to fly Delta when they do have the capability and time to travel. If you are a person who either likes to mix up their airline of choice when they fly or lives near an airport that doesn’t offer frequent Delta flights, you should look at other airline or travel credit cards that best suit your travel needs.
