Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® Summary

The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® is an airline card that offers many of the same features as other airline credit cards but offered with a bit of a twist. As what might be expected with airline cards, cardholders will earn miles on each purchase, typically based on a tiered type of system. However, where this credit card separates itself from others are the additional benefits which specifically cater to the airline’s main and most desirable destination: Hawaii.

PROS:
  • Introductory bonus offer of 50,000 miles when you spend at least $3,000 on purchases in the first 90 days
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Ability to share miles with family and friends through HawaiianAirlines.com

CONS:
  • Annual Fee
  • Limited travel options outside of Hawaii
  • High-interest rate

Best Features

The best features on this credit card may not be directly tied to the reward miles earned. Yes, the introductory bonus offer of 50,000 miles after spending at least $3,000 within the first 90 days is a very nice feature (especially compared to their earlier offer of just 35,000 miles for the same spending limit and time frame). But what the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® does to separate itself from other airline cards are the types of discounts they offer along with the ability to share miles.

Members of this credit card will receive a one-time, 50% off companion discount for a roundtrip flight between Hawaii and North America that must be used within 13 months of opening up your new account. It is a great offer considering a roundtrip ticket to Hawaii will run a consumer somewhere between $400-$500 on average. The downside is this type of discount is only offered one-time when you first receive your credit card, but they do provide a large window to redeem that discount. The other featured discount tied with this credit card, and one that is offered annually is a $100 companion discount for a roundtrip flight between Hawaii and North America. Many users consider this feature a pleasant aspect to balance out the $99 annual fee.

Another perk to the credit card is the ability to share miles with family or friends who are also frequent fliers of Hawaiian Airlines. Most airlines, whether you have a credit card or not, prohibit the transfer of miles to other accounts or will slap a fee if they do so. Hawaiian Airlines does not offer a fee for any mile transfers! It’s a great feature that separates itself from other airlines.

Drawbacks

Annual fees on credit cards are almost always a drag, and this one is no different. Certain airline cards, such as the United MileagePlus Explorer credit card or the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card, include annual fees but will be waived for the first 12 months after signing up. That type of feature is not included with the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard®. The $99 annual fee is applied immediately upon opening up the account, and the rate is slightly higher than certain other airline credit cards yearly fees.

Although Hawaii is often considered to be a premier destination for vacations and trips, the travel options for this credit card are limited to pretty much travel to and from the island chain. The card does give you the opportunity to redeem miles on Hawaiian Airlines or one any of its six partners, but you are limited to only using those miles and rewards on trips to and from Hawaii. If you are a person who either doesn’t travel to Hawaii often or enjoys trips to other destinations around the world, then you might be better suited for a credit card with a major airline that offers destinations all around the globe.

Overall Summary

The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® is a card that, despite some of its limitations, goes above and beyond with a few of the benefits offered. Cardholders will continue to earn “standard” features like 3x miles on every Hawaiian Airlines related purchase, 2x miles on purchases related to gas, dining, and grocery, and 1x mile on all other purchases. The perks such as the 50% companion discount, $100 annual companion discount and transfer of frequent flyer miles between accounts free of charge are what make this a unique credit card.

Who this card is best for

This credit card is best served for someone who is a frequent visitor to Hawaii and considers the island chain their number one vacation spot. The card offers a lot of perks to Hawaiian travelers, and the mile transfer feature can make an excellent gift for that special family member or friend. However, if you are someone who is an infrequent visitor of the state or a person who enjoys traveling to other destinations around the globe, then you might want to consider another airline or travel card that will cater to your desires
